Pterygium – Pinguecula
Pinguecula
It is a conjunctivitis’ injury, which is due to the effects of the ultraviolet radiation of the sunlight. They look like yellow-white, non-shaped depositions. Some pingueculas can gradually increase to a sufficient size, but their surgical removal rarely has any indication.
Pterygium
It is a conjunctivitis fold that invades the cornea. The pterygium almost always chronically follows or accompanies pinguecula. The main development factor seems to be the exposition to ultraviolet radiation, but the dryness, the inflammation and the exposition to the wind and dust are also important factors.
Pterygium removal is suggested when the central cornea is threatened and in cases of high irritation. For the treatment of pterygium that relapses, a transplant of a conjunctivitis part is done together with the pterygium removal.
