Ectropion
It is the anterior shift of the lower eyelid in its whole length or a part of it. It is graded by simple horizontal loosening to full anterior shift. The degenerative-senile ectropion appears usually to elderly people. Lacrimation is the main symptom, along with persisting conjunctivitis and the inflammation of the free lip and skin of the eyelid.
Treatment
It targets the horizontal shortening at the area of the major loosening of the eyelid. Our center follows the Lazy-T technique, that was presented by Smith in 1976.
Entropion
It is the posterior shift of the lower eyelid. The result is that the eyelid boundary and the eyelashes irritate the bulb. Lacrimation is the main symptom along with persisting conjunctivitis and the inflammation of the free lip and skin of the eyelid. In more advanced cases the friction of eyelashes can even cause cornea ulcer.
Treatment
In our center we follow the Inversion stiches Schoepfer technique. With this technique, attraction is being applied on the sphincter muscle with direction towards down and behind. This is the opposite torque power from the one the entropion creates. The stiches are being removed after some days with the expectation that in their place a scar tissue is created that will keep the attraction on the sphincter muscle.
