It’s a microvasculopathy that is due to diabetes and it insults the retina. Diabetic retinopathy is the main cause of serious disability of the vision for ages 20-64 years old in developed and people of the West Hemisphere, where the frequency of diabetes in the general population varies from 4-5% and/or over. This means that more than 50% of Cypriots suffer by diabetes and have or risk of having diabetic retinopathy, provided that the frequency of diabetes is only 5% in the general population, and according to median estimations.
The examination for diabetic retinopathy includes fundoscopy, vasculography and calculation of the vascular thickness using Optical Coherence Tomography. Our center provides all of these services.
Treatment
In our center the following techniques are followed as treatments:
- Laser-photoagulation. Multicentral studies have shown that photoagulation has anti-sprouting and/or improving results when implied at the stage of diabetic retinopathy that it should and with the technique that must be used.
- Intravitreal injection for reduction of the macular edema
- Vitrectomy. With vitrectomy operation compilations of advanced diabetic retinopathy are treated. With this surgical technique conditions that would lead to blindness in the past, are now treated.
Retinal and arterial hypertension
Retinal and arterial hypertension
Arterial hypertension consists a plague of the 21st century with nearly the majority of adult population suffering from it. By definition, arterial hypertension equals with diastolic pressure at least 90 mmHg and systolic pressure at least 140 mmHg. Ophthalmology is the only medicinal specialty that bloodlessly evaluates the fundus vessels and by extension the possible deteriorations of arterial hypertension.
Hypertasic retinopathy
It presents a variety of symptoms based on the heaviness of the arterial hypertension. Moreover, findings can be added, which develop in vascular blockages of retinal arteries and veins, that the arterial hypertension predisposes to.
Retinopathy in acute, malignant and accelerated arterial hypertension
This type of arterial hypertension can be the progression of chronic arterial hypertension, but it is usually due to other reasons such as nephropathy, phaeochromocytoma, collagen diseases, pregnancy toxianemia.
Symptoms
Vision blurring, double vision, lightning-like shapes obstructing the vision
